I'm thinking about removing these plastic doohickeys on the lower fork, any mechanical reason not to?

The only plausible practical reason I can think of for their existence would be to prevent the buildup of road grit, extending the life of the fork seals. Anyone know if this is correct, or likely?

They're there to protect both the fork seals and the tubes so my advise is leave well alone.
