Bar End Removal

8759 Views 18 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  SCOOTER007.
I know I saw it on one of the forums, but can't seem to to find it again. What is trick to removing the bar ends? Something about a mallet. I have some barkbusters coming in today. :)

Unscrew the bolt just a couple or 3 turns, then tap it lightly to knock the plug loose from the bar. Don't unscrew the bolt completely, or you'll knock the plug way down inside the bar, and you'll have to turn the bike upside down to get it out.

Hello

To mount it back, just screw it a little bit outside of the handlebar, so the grub screw expands enough to be blocked gently in rotation in the handlebar. Then, push it in the handlebar and screw it entirely.

Super dumb question. WHAT DIRECTION are you tapping it? I can get exactly no leverage to tap it away from the bar. My grip puppies don't help with access to the bar end, but with the rubber stock grip there isn't much room as it is.
Tap the bolt you just gave two turns out back in. That will release the expander. After that you should be able to pull it out by hand.
Dude that was so easy and I'm so embarrassed. I have done so much automotive work and couldn't figure this out for the life of me

Hi guys, so this post is the closest i've found to my problem.. I took my bar end mirrors off to turn them upside down and i made the (stupid) mistake not to look into it beforehand and so the nut came off inside the handlebar. I managed to get it out the other side by tipping the bike a bit but what do I do now? Is the only way to get the nut all the way through somehow from the clutch side through to the throttle side to get it to reach the bolt? I'm assuming it's a tapering nut and bolt that tightens inside the bar and I hope i'm not actually missing another piece of the puzzle. Cheers.
Show us which pieces you have, and which are still inside the bars? If it's just the nut, some compressed air might work. (just hold a rag there to catch the flying nut)
Hey Max, thx for the reply. I don’t think anything is still inside the handlebars but not sure. All i have is a long bolt and a nut which i managed to get out the opposite side

On mine there are 2 wedge shaped pieces with a bolt through. So as you tighten the bolt the wedges pull up against each other, expand the width and push against the inside of the bars tightening the whole lot.
Sorry not taking it apart again for photos. Have had them off so many times already for one thing or another.

Max, It's possible that there still something remaining inside the bars, i'll try to check somehow. The clutch side looks like the reference pic you sent but the throttle side seems to be different. At first I thought the rounded metal part in my first pic should come out but it doesn't budge at all. You can just make out that the nut i have has little "wings" sticking out, my mechanic mate said these would grip inside the bar allowing it to tension and tighten up. Would this make sense? But in this case i need to get the nut all the way through the bars from the other side and get it onto the bolt somehow!

Gasman, thanks for the reply, i'm trying to figure out if I'm missing something that should wedge inside or not!
I think you still have some pieces inside the bar, yes.
There doesn’t seem to be anything else inside. Can you tell me why the 2 sides look different in these pics? The left side is regular 7/8” but the right side is much smaller as it has what looks like something inside which i can’t get to move at all.

You should be able to pull that out imho. Or screw it out.

Yea so after 2 months of Lockdown here in Ibiza i finally took it to a bike shop today and he said the same. Gonna remove the throttle assembly and give it a go tomorrow!
