Hmmmm, installed a new handlebar and brake/clutch levers and now my bike won't start while in gear, only in neutral. What do you think I did wrong?
Sounds like the bike isn't picking up that the clutch is in. I'd make sure the switch is being pressed by the new levers.

Without going to check I can't remember the actual setup but there will be a switch/button that is pressed when the clutch lever is pulled in.

I'm having the same problem. Remove the clutch handle, then unscrew the switch where the wire goes into the clutch area and slide the switch out. My switch keeps staying shut even after i adjust the switch metal out...it's becoming a pain. I wish i could see how the metal on the switch looks on one that is working.

Mine has done this since day 1, so watching with interest. Anyone got a procedure how to remove the clutch safety switch, and pictures of how it should look?
No pics but just remove the locknut under the clutch handle, push the bolt out, pull the handle out and let it hang. Use a Phillips to remove the small screw under where the handle attaches (there's only one, where the wires come into the switch but on the underside). The switch will pull out where the wires are. I'm not exactly sure how its working as pulling in the clutch should? close the switch? I played with mine once and got it to work for a while but now it's doing it again. I've looked in the service manual but didnt find the switch in there. It's be nice to see a pic of one that's working.

Don't remove the switch. Just fix it. And it won't start in gear, even with the clutch pulled if the sidestand is down. Sometimes sidestand switches are gunked up and stick in the "down" position. It's a failsafe that makes it impossible to take off with the sidestand down. It would be VERY STUPID to bypass or disable this feature instead of fixing it properly.

I had this problem and here's how I fixed it. There is a micro switch behind the base of the clutch lever that should trip when you depress the clutch. You should be able to hear it click if you put your ear close to the clutch lever base and pull the clutch in. If you can't hear the "click" then the lever isn't engaging the micro switch. This is happening for one of two reasons, either the metal strip that engages with the clutch lever has been bent and needs adjusting so the clutch lever base engages with the metal, or the switch itself is moving around due to the fact one or both little plastic locating pins that hold the switch in its mounting are broken. So try taping the switch body to it's base with electrical tape, and/or bend the metal strip up a bit (you will need to remove the switch for both these operations - its not difficult). You will know if you have succeeded because you will hear the switch engage once you put everything back together and engage the clutch.

Anyone know what the microswitch does on the brake lever side?
