You always tend to ride closer to each other than if you were riding on your own. The staggered position gives a false sense of having enough distance ahead of you.
The rider left behind you made a stupid mistake of overtaking you. A left swerve was your escape. This could have ended much worse.
Fact of motorcycling is: cars will not see you on a bike and it may feel like everyone is out there to kill you. They are not, they just don't see you/too busy on facebook or with their children. If you get angry at every driver that doesn't see, stop riding a bike.
