Desert Sled forks on Icon or other model

I've seen lots of people theorizing about what it would take to put desert sled suspension on a standard scrambler, but nobody that has actually tried it. Has anyone actually done this? I have an icon and came upon a set of DS forks for a good price wondering what it would take or if it's worth the hassle

I have the feeling if you have the triple trees too it shouldn't be much work. You're going to need different front wheel bearings btw, as the axle diameter is larger on the Sled.

That said, they're taller too, so you need to raise the rear too...
Brake and ABS lines will be too short as well.

How'd you find out the axle is a larger diameter? It's not that much taller up front, should be able to slide the forks down in the triple tree a bit. Also, are we sure the stock TT wouldn't work, are the fork tubes definitely a different diameter?

I found out by stripping both bikes and measuring them.

That's good info to have, were they different diameters at the triple tree mounts as well?
Does anyone know the diameter at the triple trees?
Sounds like you want both bikes side by side and start measuring lots of details... (that may be quicker)
Right, don’t have access to a sled though
I now have Desert Sled forks, Upper and lower Triple Trees, and axle. I need to get some new wheel bearings I believe and possibly additional wheel spacers. I probably won't attempt the full swap until early next month. The DS forks are about 2.4" longer than the stock Icon with about 2" more travel. I'm planning to eat up that slack in the triple tree, and if I can't quite get that all eaten up I'll Need to bring the rear up a bit, but i'm hoping I won't have to.

I'm going to retain my stock wheels and tires for now.

Spacers and new axle procured, final piece will be a set of clip ons to fit the Desert sled forks, I'll have the clip ons mounted above the upper triple tree. I have a gague relocation bracket from rizoma that I'm hoping will still work with the sled upper triple, if it doesn't I'll end up fabbing a bracket myself. I'll post some pictures once I make some progress.

What axle are you using that fits the fork leg but also able to go through the wheels ? Or did you manage to get bearings with a bigger ID

I have the Sled Axle on order, the Mach 2 wheel will fit on the Sled Axle without changing the wheel bearings or inner spacer. I may need to adjust the outer spacer arrangement, but I haven't measured to see if the fork spacing is the same. I have some sled spacers on order as well but I won't order anything else until I get the axle in and get it mocked up.

If you are struggling to lose height at the front you could consider using a wheel from the likes of a Diavel, it fits right on (done it) and gives you a 17" wheel/tyre opposed to the 18"

As you probably have both standard (Icon?) and Desert Sled forks now, could you possibly measure and confirm their diameter at the upper and lower triple clamps? Would be much appreciated.
Were you able to keep the icon triple clamps or did you buy desert sled forks with triple clamps?
55-57(sled) and 51-52(standard)
Thanks.
Well I'm nearly finished now, just waiting on some washers and wheel spacers to show up, a few parts I didn't think I would need. Turns out the DS wheel hub is wider than the Mach 2. I know i promised pictures when I was done but i'm going to post a few in progress pics shortly. One thing i'm still not quite happy with is the length of the Throttle and clutch cables, they protrude something fierce up front. I've been making a few other mods while progressing through this build so basically nothing up front is original to the bike. I've got some Rizoma bars and risers for sale cheap if anyone wants them!

So going back on this comment, It's simply not true. Both axles are the same diameter, but the DS is longer. Maybe you should get your calipers calibrated?
