If I am correct in assuming that the 1st service is recommended at 500 miles, then this is my plan;

Day one...Dealer to home (green rt south to north) 151 miles
Day two...Loop (red rt) 199 miles
Day three...back to dealer for 1st service (green rt north to south) 151 miles

Then I just may go on a little journey to WV and points south.
625 miles for 1st service.

A service lamp will come after the desired distance travelled, I don't think the light comes on when riding but will light up if your past the mileage next time you turn on the ignition. That's probably why it varies from bike to bike.
I'm sure it used to be that the lamp could not be prevented from coming on, so if you go in early for the service then you would have to return a few days later to have the light putout. I don't think that's the case anymore but it's still not recommended to go in early for the first service because once the oil has been changed then the engine will no longer be able to 'bed in' if the process was not completed. This is due to the new oil being too good at it's job and doesn't allow anymore wear between moving parts.
I had to do this on my Diavel and get it reset shortly after the service.
