You need the brackets of course:

FYI the kit also comes with a little curved pipe they want you to stick in your exhaust to divert it away from the boxes. You can's see it when the boxes are on...

I bought the trekker 33Ls because they didn't have a 30L at the time and they look a little too big for the bike. These ones may be better suited.
