Journalists differing opinions

Just a bit of fun on how some journalists are talking about the disappointing 75bhp power output of the Scrambler when the 796 Monster has a 'healthy' 87bhp.
Below is a paragraph from Top speeds review of the 796 Hypermotard with 81bhp from 2012

'Its engine has na 803cc displacement, is air cooled and delivers a maximum power of 81hp (59.6kW) @ 8000rpm and 55.7lb-ft (7.7kgm) of torque at 6250rpm. This massive power is sent to the rear wheel through a six speed gearbox which is combined with the APTC ‘wet’ clutch. This advanced clutch prevents destabilizing of the rear-end under aggressive down-shifting and also gives the extra benefit of a super-light feel at the lever.'

Note how the tester says 'this massive power is sent to the rear wheel through a six speed box'.

Massive 81bhp although the Hypers dry weight is 8lb lighter than the Scrambler

I have a feeling we will be able to get that extra HP out of this bike, and shed some weight. It is going to be a beast. I'll call her karma.

If you take in the fact that the monster have a 15x39 transmission, the hypermotard a 15x41 and the scrambler a 15x46 i can't see why the result will be less good at common speed.

True, The 0-60 time on the scrambler is pretty clutch. And I don't know how often I am going to be going over 110.
Where did you find the 0-60 time?

In one of the video reviews they state 3.8 seconds. Which I think is what they clocked. There are a few other pages that state quicker.

3.8 It look like the Monster 696. It's good for me.

Altough your link seem to not know what they are saying
Scrambler has a top speed of 165 mph and it can reach 0-60 mph in just 3.4 seconds.

I agree, the article seems confused. I was going go through the video reviews again to see who stated the time. But they blocked my youtube here at work again.

The biggest reason that motor is down on power compared to the 796 monster or 800SS is the Scramblers single throttle body. The older models had one for each cylinder. This enables more air to pass through the motor without that restriction. At lower RPM it's not a problem as the single throttle body actually generates more velocity to the airflow which helps with a better torque. But at higher rev's its a soda straw on a fire hose. There won't be a bolt on fix for this.

Well put, and what a lot of people seem to not realize is HP for winning arguments and Torque for winning races.
Horse power is the common datum when comparing bikes in the pub but it's torque that gives us the sensation we seek when riding at everyday speeds.

I completely agree on torque, and it's not just bikes. One of the things I love about my tuned VW GTI is that it produces 265-300 ft-lbs of torque from under 2000 RPM all the way to 5000 RPM, before it starts falling off. Having all that torque right in the meat of daily usable RPM's makes the car feel much more powerful.

Back to bikes, I test rode a Triumph Rocket III when they first came out, and that thing is a torque monster (about 130 ft-lbs at just 2500 RPM). It was so much fun to just muscle the low end torque around rather than wind it out. It's a huge bike, but the torque was intoxicating.

Love my GTI
