Even on my first brief test on the demo Scrambler I felt the suspension was a bit too hard for my liking. When I took delivery and longer runs only confirmed my first impression.
So I ended up taking my bike to Nitron in the UK so they could do a full evaluation of the suspension, mine was the first Scrambler they had been able to get into the workshop and

I could only leave the bike with them for a couple of days so they did the rear shock as I felt that was the main problem for me.
The guy that built the shock, Scott Maskell, agreed but after a test ride said he felt the forks were also too hard on the damping particularly the high speed damping, however he also agreed the rear shock was hard on the spring and damping.

As standard the spring is a progressive rate spring, and I think what was happening for me was the softer part of the spring was quickly compressed by my weight (90 kgs) and then the harder part of the spring is simply too hard.
The shock that Nitron built has a linear rate spring which is selected for my weight and the damping is adjusted to suit the spring rate. I have the R1 shock which has pre-load adjustment and 1 damping adjustment which adjust's both compression and re-bound at a pre-set ratio. They also do shocks which have separate compression and re-bound adjustment and also adjustable high and low speed compression.
To be honest I don't think I will be adjusting anything, I went for a 75km spin yesterday on a good variety of roads and it feels absolutely great, big thank you to Nitron and Scott, you've done a brilliant job.
I think I'll put up with the forks till after the summer but the rear shock was well worth doing IMO.

Many thanks for re writing this report Jerry,

I'm sure its going to be a big help for people like me who are not too happy with the rear set up, I've sent Nitron a contact report, hoping they will get back to me with a price and delivery,

I can confirm all written by Jerry. the rear mono is not working fine even for my 70 kgs. The spring is too hard (in general) and without any rebound "brake" the mono open very quickly.

I'm waiting for Ohlins, on June, to solve the problem

I'm wondering if the suspension is also instrumental in my snatchy ride, as every little undulation on the road surface seems to be transmitted to my throttle hand - Ive tried going along slightly raising myself out of the saddle and it does improve!

Well Gill , lets say it doesn't help any if the road is very uneven ,

Mines like a bucking bronco on the roads around my home, and you can't help feeling a little out of control at first, I'm used to it now,

I'm 96 kilos and no way will this rear spring adjust to what I need, I told you I've put it on the top setting and it's much better, but not good enough,

I think the key is in getting a better damper/spring rate, This may be the best way for you to go, It could also help with your seat height, being lighter (you I mean) they could make you one a little shorter, that would lower the seat for you , kill 2 birds with one stone so to speak

I'll not be altering my throttle response in any way, I like it just the way it is

I may well look into this, need more info though as I am not technically minded where bikes are concerned

. I'll wait to see how yours works out, or perhaps speak to these people. I have mine on bottom setting purely for height. If I can get a better shock (along with lowered seat) which will improve things then maybe the throttle won't be an issue

Tell you what Gill, When I get mine, you can put your lowered seat on my bike and give it a try, It won't be perfect for your weight but it'll give you a better idea ,
I've ordered the NTR R 1, the same one that Jerry has, I'ts £328 +vat making £408-60 inc postage /packing etc,

Well Graham I'm sure you'll be delighted with it. As a matter of interest do you have the same issues with the forks as I have?

Possibly Jerry, But I felt by far the worst part was the rear shock/damper, I felt it on the test bike before I ordered my Icon, In my opinion the rear starts to buck then the front follows, It was my aim to sort out the rear first and then see where it goes when thats sorted, we shall see,
They were spot on at Nitron, wanting to know if I carried a pillion, (which I don't ) my weight with my gear on, and what type of roads/ riding I do, and would I use it off road etc, I was very impressed, I think they could get a few orders from our forum members in the future,
ps, I did ask if I could have a yellow spring

no sorry we don't do yellow

They don't do yellow, I suppose it's not to copy competitors. Did they offer any other colour or is it just blue ?
It won't be too difficult to change if not. I've done a few because they've been scruffy (project bikes)

I know they do black springs to order and they are going to start doing titanium coloured, but I just went for their "corporate" colour as it was on the shelf. To be honest it makes it obvious it's not an Ohlins or any other brand for that matter.
I first used Nitron in 2004 when I bought a new SV1000 and they built a rear shock for that, and I've used them ever since always found them to be first class.

Good to know and that price too. The R1 is that the model or one from an R1 curiosly. I take a pillion often so would it be ok for me too.

They do 3 versions R1, R2 and R3. R1 is the "base model, pre-load adjustment and combined compression and rebound adjustment.
R2 has pre-load, and separate compression and rebound adjustment.
R3 is top of the pile and has all the above plus high speed compression adjustment.
Nothing to do with any R1 by Yamaha!!!!!
By the way if you take a pillion on a regular basis then a hydraulic pre-load adjuster is a great idea.

According to my quick conversion that rear shock runs right around 600.00 US? I think I'll wait and see how the stock one is.

Just the Blue spring was offered to me Hui, Once I'm happy with it I'll get it powder coated to match the bike

Albie, Like I said , they asked me if I carried a pillion passenger, and if so it would have been a different spec, they don't have these on the shelf, it would be assembled specifically for you,

I shall keep the stock shock , just in case I ever need to swap back for any reason,
