Scrambler Nitron rear shock

Even on my first brief test on the demo Scrambler I felt the suspension was a bit too hard for my liking. When I took delivery and longer runs only confirmed my first impression.
So I ended up taking my bike to Nitron in the UK so they could do a full evaluation of the suspension, mine was the first Scrambler they had been able to get into the workshop and

I could only leave the bike with them for a couple of days so they did the rear shock as I felt that was the main problem for me.
The guy that built the shock, Scott Maskell, agreed but after a test ride said he felt the forks were also too hard on the damping particularly the high speed damping, however he also agreed the rear shock was hard on the spring and damping.

As standard the spring is a progressive rate spring, and I think what was happening for me was the softer part of the spring was quickly compressed by my weight (90 kgs) and then the harder part of the spring is simply too hard.
The shock that Nitron built has a linear rate spring which is selected for my weight and the damping is adjusted to suit the spring rate. I have the R1 shock which has pre-load adjustment and 1 damping adjustment which adjust's both compression and re-bound at a pre-set ratio. They also do shocks which have separate compression and re-bound adjustment and also adjustable high and low speed compression.
To be honest I don't think I will be adjusting anything, I went for a 75km spin yesterday on a good variety of roads and it feels absolutely great, big thank you to Nitron and Scott, you've done a brilliant job.
I think I'll put up with the forks till after the summer but the rear shock was well worth doing IMO.

I found a cure for the hard suspension on sunday......ride it like you stole it :D

You could have a bit of truth there, the suspension will sag and break-in like any other moving part. I lowered a brand new Bandit for someone, after three years it had softened enough that I had to raise it again. All be it not back to standard but in-between.
The seat will soften quite a bit too.

Something else worth noting, my Scrambler came with the rear tyre pressure set at the two-up 42psi. I run my tyres set at 36+36. (2.5+2.5 bar). Sometimes 32psi rear works best for me.
Ok guys and gals  Rear shocker arrived earlier, beautifully made etc, looks too nice to put on the bike, :(

Came on time, well packed and with an adjuster (the black item) and full instructions on how to fit to the Scrambler and instruction book should you need to alter anything,

Just need to fit it tomorrow, then give it a workout

You have to bear in mind that manufacturer's also have to build a bike which may carry 2x 120+ kgs people so if 1 person who weighs 70 kgs is the only person who rides the bike it stands to reason they will find the suspension a tad firm!
Hmmm I weigh 59kgs so don't think I'm going to make much of an impression on breaking in the suspension  - I've got it on the lowest setting! Perhaps I need to start taking lots of luggage around with me, house bricks etc o_O
When I have this fitted you can have a test ride on mine, just need to swap your seat over, :)

It may give you some idea, But they'd make one set up for your weight

It looks beautifull!!! We are all waiting for your thorough report.

Ooo ta Graham, we'll have a steak pie too ;)
Look forward to hearing how you like the new shock Graham :)
and full instructions on how to fit to the Scrambler
Instructions?!!!

Doesn't sound like a scrambler part to me....................

It does look good, I'm looking forward to your ride report,
Well ! I'd better press on and get it fitted then ;)
Has anyone had luck adjusting the stock rear shock? The spanner provided with the bike does not work for me. Every time I begin putting pressure on it to turn the ring nut the spanner slips. Do I need to get a better after market spanner?
You might try taking the tension out of it by lifting the bike slightly with a jack under the frame. (But avoid lifting via the oil filter!)
I have the solution since I made the same mistake at first. There is a collar in the tool kit that fits over the end of the spanner to give you the needed leverage, it's still tight but its night and day trying to do the adjustment without it on the end of the spanner handle. It looks like a steel collar that fits over the end and gives you the needed extra force.
Yep use the collar and apply some force and it will move in one sudden jolt
With that tool it is easy to turn

I REALLY like what Nitron has done with that shock.

The price is great - here in the States, and it's really all the Scrambler needs, IMO - a full-on race unit would be a waste.

Just heard we can get a gray spring on this (no offence to those who fancy the strange blue), so I think I'm gonna pull the trigger very soon.
Would love to hear the final outcome of the installation since the older I get the less I like wrenching on my bikes due to severe carpal tunnel and other "getting old" conditions :)

I think your right, it's a budget priced bike with moderate performance and so fitting expensive, high end suspension is overkill really. The bike needs better susension for sure, but it needn't be expensive - simply proportionate to the price and performance of the bike.

I am thinking of getting the JRi from SBKen I have used them and I am not familiar with Nitron as far as had any on my bikes so I want to know how they are compared to stock and higher end suspension
