Scrambler Range & Fuel Mileage

Hey ladies and gents that already have their bikes, what kind of range and mileage are you getting out of those tanks?

I know that my Scout has seen some of the models have fuel pickup issues and running out of fuel before the fuel light came on.

I’ve got 300 miles on the bike and have started revving higher for good break in, but it’s killing my fuel economy. Or maybe I didn’t truly fill the tank last fill up so it’s making my fill up today look bad for mpg.

Average MPG is 46.5. I went 10 miles after the fuel light came on, I believe you can squeeze almost 30 out of it after the indicator.

It’s really hard for me to see when I’m fueling, I think I’m getting it almost to the top. I must have today because it was 2.7gal into a 3.6g tank. Any tips on this? I can see the fuel level inside the tank easily on my other bikes.

So based on this initial info, I could get 160 from a tank but would be on fumes at the end. I think I could aim to fill up at 130 and be ok.

To be honest I fill it till it's, like 20mm below flush with the top of the tank and I haven't had any overspill problems – I can see the fuel easy enough at that level. It means you have to mess around a little but I like to really fill up when I can.

It depends where Vix lives. In California for example they have fuel nozzles that completely seal around the tank outlet (on a car or bike) and you cannot see into the tank at all when you are filling. In Australia or NZ I do exactly the same as you with a bike I just visually fill to just below the neck of the filler hole in the tank. I put 12.2L into the Scrambler 13.5L tank when I filled it the other day.

Yeah, these nozzles suck.

I typically pull the fume sucking thingy back with my other hand, and fill up to the brim.

Yeah, I think a lot of Californians do that. You just push it back so it actuates the switch and then fill normally.

I typically fill my Scrambler until the fuel alllllllmost touches the bottom of the filler neck when it's on the sidestand.
I read somewhere that filling right up to the top can cause problems.

Well, you don't want to fill it to the point where you start getting fuel up in the filler neck. If that happens, some of it will likely slosh out down the drain tube and you'll dump some fuel on the ground (and hopefully not on to a hot engine) but it's not that big a deal. Still, it smells bad and who wants fuel getting dumped out?
Well, if you still have the carbon canister, the excess fuel could clog the canister (I’ve been told).

If you removed it, make sure the hose is routed to the lower left side of the bike...

We're not talking about right to the very top of the aperture - you know as you look into the tank there's a 'sleeve' you can see that penetrates 20 - 30mm into the tank? That's the fill line for me - the fuel touching the bottom of that sleeve. No carbon canister to worry about on my Aussie 2015 Icon.

I presume that there is an overflow on the Scrambler like most bikes. There is a drain hose shown on the parts fiche. If you were to fill right to the brim there is a small hole in the cap assembly that drains the excess fuel here in Australia at least down to the ground under the bike.

There is but it's pathetically small and mine's always blocked :-/ !
It’s the black box on the right side of the bike, behind the plastic panel.
For what it's worth, I get 24-25 Km per L.

wow, that is awesome. I just did a 1200km round trip (Rode my G650GS down and traded it) to pickup my new Icon. and after getting it back here to Gisborne NZ. the light came on at 160km, and I did another 20km before filling. So I got 182km, for 11.5l So that only worked out to 15.8km per Litre. which isn't very good, have the km's were open road, the other half have been commuting around town. I am hoping it gets better after being run in.
Cheers Col
I get about 100 to 110 miles before the orange light on my 1100.

Then there is 30 safe miles and probably another 15 to 20 if you wanted to risk it and take it easy..

Its a 15 Litre tank

My normal ride of about 118 miles takes around 12 litres +/- 1 depending on how fast...

So I get around 9.8 miles per litre or 15.7 km/litre - so approx 45 MPG

My 800 was slightly better. - but not much.

This is almost identical to my 1200 Multistrada... the ride on that is faster... but it has better aerodynamics too.

Now I'm filling up more (about another 80p worth) I get 120m+ before the light comes on. Makes a big difference as a lot of my rides seem to be iro 100 miles.
