Sub-$300 Heated Grips

I’m a sucker for heated grips but I wasn’t willing to shell out the big $$ Ducati wants for theirs. I still wanted a clean install though so I did a little research...

Looking at this pic of the wiring for the factory heated grip connections I saw that the plugs used to blank off the connectors had wires attached.

I removed those and spliced them to the wiring for some $45 Symtec stick on heated grips. Had my local shop activate the controls and presto, warm hands.

Just putting it out there that you can have heated grips using the factory controls without shelling out the big bucks.

Remembering that I am no electrical expert, my understanding is that polarity doesn’t matter.

Yeah, I know something about that. Heal up, you’ll be ok.

I know this thread is about heated grips, but allow me to cast a vote into the heated gloves column. Gerbing 7.2v have plenty of juice and 3 warming modes. Replacement batteries are under the Harley-Davidson brand. All for much less than 300 dollars, and no need to mess with electronics other than charging them after a few rides. Just my .02$.

OMG that's real.?

309 and I are talking <£50.
You got shares in Gerbing?

No, I don't. Sorry I was only able to provide about 50% savings off of stock heated grip price. Didn't realize that the threshold was 85% off. I personally don't want to cut and splice wires and my gloves are good for other things like walking my dogs in the snow. Thought I was being helpful.

I owned a set of leather 12v Gerbing gloves for a while. I prefer heated grips personally. I liked the gloves fine but find the grips to be a little more effective for me. They’re also much more convenient. Great for the early/late part of the ride that’s a little cooler..

I think its worth mentioning that the splicing of wires I did was not on the factory harness and the bike could be returned to stock easily.

All that said, I’m glad you like your gloves and don’t care one bit if you have an opinion that differs from mine. You ARE being helpful. Thumbs up!

love to hear a long term review - I wonder how much heat they put out compared to stock...

No problems with mine but haven't ridden much in the last year. One outing in December for mot when I got drenched but had warm hands. All three levels worked fine. Hot is too hot after a while and medium too I think.
Can't say how they compare to stock.

Cool. I think I’ll follow your lead on these.
Under the grips the plastic isn’t smooth - did you file down the sharpish protrusions or just go as is. I’m going to try your install this week
I put mine over the grips and used shrink rubber to keep them tight. Then rolled grip puppies over.. the top. The throttle side runs round a bit as the shrink rubber was a bit too big.
Mine were a gift, which was nice. But I do like the fact they are a very neat install. I haven't the relevant skills to do this sort of thing myself. Love the way Ducati use the starter button for them too, very cool.
Would these work on a 2017 Desert Sled? I’m seeing that they may be for 2019 and up? Is that accurate?
I loved this idea from this thread so much but it was largely assuming someone had an understanding of automotive wiring.

I made a YouTube video of my install for someone with less technical know-how to see how this can be done. It is a very good idea and the diagram made the difference for me. Also don’t hate that I saved a ton of money (even though I paid the $80 for a Ducati dealer to activate the heated grip functions)

Just looked at my reply to your post. I was rude and out of order. Sorry mate.

Cured with a re-shrink and electrical tape at each end.
