So, after griping about the discomfort of my FT, and spending lots of cash to rectify, I went on a little (longer than usual) ride on one of my other bikes. The roads were horrible, wet, frosty and covered in salt...

I reckon that, for a biker, being a despatch rider must have been as good as it got if you were in the military.
Yes, quite glamorous and fairly well paid to reflect the danger faced daily. I went to France in 2016 to visit the military war graves and memorials as my (great great great) Uncle was a dispatch rider, killed in WW1 at the battle of the Somme along with his two brothers, both infantry, one died at the Somme,the other Ypres.
Their names are on the memorial at Thiepval. If you've never been, you should visit. One of the most eye opening visits I've made anywhere.
